Between 24 and 25 June 2025, the University of Bucharest hosted the kick-off meeting of the FARO project, held within the framework of the CIVIS Open Lab.
The event took place in a hybrid format and brought together participants from four European academic institutions, all members of the CIVIS Alliance: the University of Bucharest, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Sapienza Università di Roma, and Aix-Marseille Université.
Over the course of the two days, discussions and activities focused on the influence of ethnic and cultural minorities in Bucharest on the city’s economic, infrastructural, and academic development. Central to this approach was the shared objective of understanding how the tangible and intangible heritage of these communities is reflected in the urban fabric of the capital and in the identity of the University of Bucharest.
The programme included roundtable discussions and field visits, offering participants the opportunity to directly explore elements of urban heritage. Activities featured a visit to the Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum, a cultural visit to the Armenian Church of Bucharest, and a guided tour of the city centre. These experiences enabled participants to identify and analyse how Bucharest preserves and integrates cultural diversity within its public spaces and architectural landscape.
The FARO project, part of the CIVIS Open Lab, aims to investigate and promote the cultural heritage of minority communities in European urban environments through interdisciplinary research and collaboration between universities, local communities, and cultural institutions.
CIVIS is a European University Alliance bringing together 11 of Europe’s leading universities, representing approximately 500,000 students and over 70,000 staff members, including more than 37,400 academic staff and researchers. Their shared expertise, knowledge, and values not only strengthen CIVIS’s role in shaping the future of higher education, but also contribute to addressing today’s most pressing societal and practical challenges.
CIVIS Open Lab–UB is a collaborative structure that brings together internal and external stakeholders to identify local community needs and develop joint projects with tangible social impact.
