Romanian Olympic students ranked first, winning four gold medals and two silver medals at the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO), held from April 25 to 30 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The team was led by Associate Professor Cătălin-Liviu Gherghe, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest, as leader, and by Professor Ovidiu Sontea from “Tudor Vianu” National College in Bucharest, serving as deputy.
The gold medal winners of the 2025 Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO 2025) are:
- Emanuel Mazăre, “Alexandru Odobescu” National College in Pitești;
- Radu Stoleriu, “Emil Racoviță” National College in Iași;
- Pavel Ciurea, International Computer High School of Bucharest;
- Andrei Vila, International Computer High School of Bucharest.
The following students were awarded silver medals:
- Alexandru Ciobotea, International Computer High School of Bucharest;
- David Ghibu, International Computer High School of Bucharest.
Romania was first in the country rankings, with a total of 198 points.
The 42nd edition of the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad brought together teams from member countries Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia, and Turkey, as well as teams from invited countries Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, France, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the United Kingdom.
In this context, Associate Professor Cătălin-Liviu Gherghe, PhD, stated: “Everyone agreed that this year’s problems were more difficult than in previous years. Nevertheless, our students scored full marks on the first three problems, which is a rare achievement.”
