On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB) invites you to the 44th ArchaeoSciences seminar. This edition’s guest speaker is Dr. Antonis Iliopoulos from Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia, USA), who will present a lecture titled: „Cognitive and Semiotic Archaeology at the Service of Archaeological Science: The Case of Early Body Ornamentation”.
The seminar will take place on starting at 11:00 (EET), at the Kindergarten Building in Sultana (DJ303 79, Sultana, Călărași).
Dr. Antonis Iliopoulos is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Emory University’s Philosophy Department, who holds an HBSc in forensic anthropology (University of Toronto), an MPhil in human evolution (Cantab), and a DPhil in cognitive archaeology (Oxon). His research focuses on the evolution of the human mind, as well as on the creative variety of gesture. He has published in The Oxford Handbook of Human Symbolic Evolution, Quaternary International, Philosophy and Technology, Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences, Semiotica, Signs and Society, and Punctum.
These seminars are an original initiative of the ArchaeoSciences Platform (ASp) at ICUB, which aims to provide an open space for professionals in archaeological sciences worldwide to share knowledge and engage with the latest methodological and theoretical advances in the study of the past. They also offer Romanian students a valuable opportunity to discover the interdisciplinary dimensions of archaeology and archaeosciences.
