Between July 20–26, 2025, the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) was held in Taipei, Taiwan – one of the world’s most prestigious interdisciplinary competitions for young people passionate about the science of language. The Romanian national team, composed of high school students from across the country, achieved outstanding results: one gold medal, five bronze medals, and two honorable mentions.

Bronze medals: Mihaela Anghel, Theoretical High School “Alexandru Ghica,” Alexandria; Andrei Dragu, National College of Computer Science “Tudor Vianu,” Bucharest; Luiza Teodora Mihai, National College, Iași; Valeria Pishchymukha, National College “George Coșbuc,” Cluj-Napoca; Ioana Stănoiu, International Computer Science High School, Bucharest
Honorable mentions: Alin Cristian Chindea, National College “Ion Maiorescu,” Giurgiu; Ana Teodora Grigorie, National College “Carol I,” Craiova
The students were trained and mentored by professors and experts designated by the Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy “Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti.” Among them were Valentina Cojocaru and Roxana Magdalena Preda, teaching staff at the Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest; Tamara Ivanof, former IOL medalist and current student at Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca; Mihai-Alexandru Bratu, triple IOL medalist and student at Delft University of Technology; and Paul Helmer, former IOL medalist and associate lecturer at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.
Counselor Daniel Georgescu from the Ministry of Education and Research ensured the smooth organization of the Romanian delegation’s participation in the competition.
