Between June 14-18, 2022, the team of the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest participated in the semifinals of the XXXVII edition of the “René Cassin” international student pleading competition in the field of European human rights.
The team of the Faculty of Law was composed of students Dariana Vișoiu (MA in public international law), Maria Cerasela Matei and Maria Bebec (BA in law, fourth year), being trained by lecturer Daniela-Anca Deteșeanu, PhD, and lecturer Carmen Achimescu, PhD, teaching staff at the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest.
The team placed 7th out of 32 semi-finalist teams, and student Maria Bebec won the award for the best defense pleading and the award for the best non-francophone pleading.
The semi-finalist teams are selected following a written phase. Starting from a fictitious case, each team entered in the competition writes a memorandum (either for the complainant or for the defendant state). The best 32 teams in the competition (16 for the claimant, 16 for the defendant) meet in Strasbourg, at the headquarters of the European Court of Human Rights, for the oral phase of the pleadings.
This exceptional achievement confirms once more, this year, the special quality of the International Law School of the Faculty of Law – University of Bucharest, as well as the French-speaking law school within the faculty, organized in collaboration with the Franco-Romanian Legal College of European Studies.
