Friday, August 2nd 2024, students of the University of Bucharest participated at the ceremony organized by the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee on the occasion of David Popovici’s return to our country, at the Henri Coandă International Airport in Bucharest. The students were accompanied by professor Magdalena Iordache-Platis, vice-rector for Students, quality management, sustainability and social responsibility of UB.
On this occasion, representatives of the University of Bucharest congratulated both David Popovici and Adrian Rădulescu, his coach, for the extraordinary results they obtained at the 2024 edition of the Olympic Games in Paris and for bringing home, to Romania, the Olympic gold.
The University of Bucharest has constantly supported, through messages published on its website, www.unibuc.ro, as well as on UB’s social network accounts, the participation of “the ordinary boy who swims fast” to national and international competitions.
Multiple times worldwide swimming champion, David Popovici chose the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences in the July 2023 admission session and is part of the first generation of performance scholarship receivers of UB. Designated the Best swimmer of 2022 by the Swimming World Magazine, the most prestigious publication in the world dedicated to swimming, David Popovici has won many remarkable awards during his career.
Among these, we mention the two gold medals at the World Swimming Championship in Budapest (2022) – 100m and, respectively, 200m freestyle, the silver medal at the World Swimming Championships in Melbourne (2022) – 200m freestyle, but also the gold medals obtained in 2022 at the European Swimming Championships in Rome – 100m and, respectively, 200m freestyle and in 2021 at the European Swimming Championships in Kazan – 200m freestyle.
The University of Bucharest has filed for financing, at the National Investments Company (CNI), the project for constructing a semi-Olympic swimming pool
On the same day, August 2nd 2024, the day that David Popovici returned to the country from Paris, the University of Bucharest filed at the National Investments Company (CNI), the project for constructing a semi-olympic swimming pool. The sports complex will be constructed on Splaiul Independenței, in the proximity of the Grozăvești student campus, on a terrain measuring over 5.500 square meters.

At the same time, professor Marian Preda congratulated David Popovici’s coach: Thank your for the essential contribution that you had in obtaining the exceptional performances from the 2024 Olympic Games, together with David Popovici. We are proud to have next to us people who share to the world the story of Romanian sports.
The University of Bucharest, the university of champions: 392 sports champions, national and international Olympians registered in the 2024 July session
In the July 2024 admission session, 376 national Olympic pupils chose the University of Bucharest for continuing their studies and academic training. Among them, 212 chose the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, 75 opted for the Faculty of Geography, 24 chose the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and another 21 Olympians chose the Faculty of Physics. At the same time, the Faculty of Law was chosen by 19 Olympians, while the Faculty of Chemistry was chosen by 14 Olympians. Not lastly, 3 Olympic pupils decided for the Faculty of Letters, two Olympic pupils each opted for the Faculty of History, the Faculty of Psychology and Educations Sciences and for the Justinian the Patriarch Faculty of Orthodox Theology, while the Faculties of Biology and that of Baptist Theology will each have an Olympic student starting next fall.
To them, we add 16 international sports and Olympic champions who registered for the special places dedicated to performance scholarship receivers in the program launched by the University of Bucharest starting with the academic year 2023 – 2024. Thus, they are a part of the second generation of UB’s performance scholarship beneficiareies and will receive scholarships worth 1.500 lei (gold medal/first place), 1.250 lei (silver medal/2nd place) and, respectively, 1.000 lei (bronze medal/3rd place), as well as the chance to receive a place financed by study grants, benefiting from a special place status.
