Friday, August 23rd 2024, the Festivity Hall of the UB Faculty of Physics hosted the opening event of the 7th edition of the Summer School of Science and Technology from Măgurele (MSciTeh), co-organized by the University of Bucharest. More than 70 high school pupils and 25 science professors will participate in the activities that will unreel until September 5th. This year’s edition of MSciTeh celebrated 70 years since the founding of CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research).
At the official opening, the University of Bucharest was represented by associate professor Constantin Vică, PhD, vice-rector for International Relations and Public Relations, associate professor Vasile Bercu, PhD, vice-dean of the Faculty of Physics, lecturer Ioan Munteanu, PhD, vice-dean of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics and lecturer Delia-Laura Popescu, PhD, vice-dean of the Faculty of Chemistry.
At the same time, PhD Ioan Ursu, IFIN-HH scientific secretary also held a presentation, next to PhD Constantin Ionescu, general director of INFP, PhD Ionuț Enculescu, general director of INCDFM, PhD Felix Sima, Scientific secretary at INFLPR, and PhD Octavian Micu, ISS Scientific Council.
The opening festivity was moderated by lecturer Ana Maria Neagu, PhD, teaching staff at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Studies of the University of Bucharest.
The summer school offers pupils a unique teaching experience, useful in choosing a study direction after finishing high school. This year, MSciTeh proposes 17 themes which combine theoretical learning with practical activities in the research labs from the Research Station in Măgurele. Pupils will work with experts in the field and will develop innovative projective related to understanding the world we live in, finding solutions for current problems or for problems humankind may face in the future, and they will have the chance to get involved in innovative technological initiatives which will allow us to live in a better and safer world. Among this year’s themes we mention: Spatial safety: detecting asteroids in astronomical observations, Antimicrobial peptides: a possible weapon against pathogenic agents, Geotree: charting tree roots through geophysics and Messaging system in mesh network for safer mountain trails.
The participating professors will have the chance to assist in training sessions in the UNESCO Geopark Ținutul Buzăului and in the labs of the Research Platform in Măgurele, assisted by researchers in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and by education experts. They will apply transdisciplinary measures in order to get pupils’ interest and to nurture their curiosity about the sciences of the modern world, aiming, thus, to encourage them in pursuing a career which includes, to the highest degree possible, science in all its aspects. The 25 high school professors will be accompanied by 10 students from the Faculty of Physics, the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics and the Faculty of Geography of the University of Bucharest throughout the whole 7 days of activities, which, thanks to international participation, will be held in English. At the same time, the event will benefit from the support of the volunteers within the Association of Physics students of the University of Bucharest.
