Between 15-16 October 2019, Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest and ICUB organized the international workshop “Approaches to Discourse-Relational Devices (DRDs): Textual Connectors, Discourse Markers, Modal Particles”.
The event was hosted at the University House of Bucharest and was attended by two special guests, the well-known linguistic specialists, prof. Liesbeth Degand from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and prof. Manfred Stede from the University of Postdam (Germany). Besides the two professors, the workshop was also attended by specialists from UB and other universities and research centres from the country and from abroad.
The workshop was addressed equally to young researchers, doctoral students, master students in linguistics and students interested in the topic and in a future training in this field.
Papers held within the workshop focused on discursive markers and connectors, elements used to discourse structure and coherence, having an utterly importance for understanding certain universal (psiho) linguistic issues of communication. Contributions analyse these units from several perspectives: corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitivist and variation studies.
Combining theoretic and aplicative aspects, the workshop had a practical section, a concrete demonstration of an analysis method, which manipulates a big number of language/discourse data. The demonstration was held by Ludivine Crible, a post-doctoral researcher of the University of Edinburgh (Great Britain).
