On 20 November 2026, the thematic workshop “Rumaniola and Rumaniols” will take place as part of the Annual International Conference of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The workshop is coordinated by Associate Professor Paul Buzilă, PhD, and will focus on the social and sociolinguistic dynamics of Romanian communities in Spain.
After more than three decades of Romanian migration to Spain, contact between Romanian and Spanish has given rise to new linguistic practices and forms of identity. The workshop will explore the evolution of Rumaniola, from a linguistic variety to a potential marker of hybrid cultural identity, bringing together contributions from sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, migration studies, and linguistic anthropology.
To apply, participants should submit abstracts in Romanian, Spanish, or English (maximum two pages, including references) to paul.buzila@lls.unibuc.ro. The submission deadline is 15 October 2026.
Suggested topics include:
- Romanian–Spanish language contact;
- Bilingualism and multilingualism;
- Language change and variation;
- Second-generation migrants;
- Digital practices and social media;
- Transnational identities;
- Language education and language policies.
The workshop is open to academic staff, doctoral students, and researchers from a range of disciplines, including sociology, education sciences, geography, political science, linguistics, literature and cultural studies, and ethnology.
The workshop will also feature invited speakers Maria Pop (Romanian Cultural Institute in Madrid) and Kim Schulte (Universitat Jaume I, Castellón de la Plana).
