The Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest expresses its deep concern over the recent proliferation in the public sphere of activities carried out by individuals or legal entities commemorating or honouring people responsible for crimes against humanity, war crimes, murders, and acts of violence of a fascist, legionary, racist, or xenophobic nature. Throughout the 20th century, undemocratic regimes that were responsible for the deaths of millions existed in various countries, including Romania. Our responsibility, as a society today, is to prevent the repetition of such tragic episodes.
The Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest strongly emphasizes that any use, dissemination, or propaganda of logos, symbols and ideas of a fascist, legionary, racist, or xenophobic nature, as well as the glorification of individuals guilty of committing genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, is prohibited and sanctioned under the provisions of GEO 31/2002 of March 13, 2002, concerning the prohibition of organizations, symbols, and acts of a fascist, legionary, racist, or xenophobic nature and the promotion of the cult of persons guilty of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, as well as Law No. 217/2015, which amends and supplements GEO No. 31/2002 regarding the prohibition of organizations, symbols, and acts of a fascist, racist, or xenophobic nature and the promotion of the cult of persons guilty of committing crimes against peace and humanity.
The Faculty of History at the University of Bucharest reiterates the importance of defending democratic values, individual and civil rights and freedoms, and firmly condemns any violation of these principles. Additionally, the Faculty of History unequivocally rejects any form of manifestation, promotion, or affiliation with activities, actions, or entities that disseminate fascist, legionary, racist, anti-Semitic, or xenophobic logos, images, symbols, or ideas. We strongly condemn any support for infamous figures from our history, such as Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, Ion Antonescu, or other individuals or movements responsible for murders, war crimes, or xenophobic, anti-Semite, and racist actions.
