On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the Department for Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Education and Research of Romania organized the conference “Integrating Circular Economy Skills into Education.” The event marked an important step in the joint efforts of the two institutions to introduce the subject “Circular Economy and Responsible Consumption” as an optional course for 7th grade, starting with the 2026–2027 school year.
The University of Bucharest was represented at the conference by Professor Lucian Ciolan, Vice-Rector for Development Projects, Lifelong Learning and Educational Infrastructure. Other participants included László Borbély, State Counselor and Coordinator of the Department for Sustainable Development, Sorin Ion, State Secretary responsible for pre-university education, Lucian-Ionel Cioca, Vice President of the Ernest Lupan Institute for Research in Circular Economy and Environment, Daniela Palcău, General School Inspector of Buzău County, Constantin Toma, Mayor of Buzău, and Gabriel Vrînceanu, Head of Service within the National Center for Curriculum and Evaluation.
The event was also attended by 25 sixth-grade students from Romania’s first “green school,” Secondary School No. 11 Buzău, who will begin studying “Circular Economy and Responsible Consumption” starting in the 2026–2027 school year.
The University of Bucharest: training experts in sustainable development
Between March and July 2025, through its postgraduate program “Expert in Sustainable Development,” the University of Bucharest trained 1,838 specialists in sustainable development. All of them are now part of the national network supporting the implementation of Romania’s 2030 National Sustainable Development Strategy.
The program is part of a broader national initiative led by the Department for Sustainable Development to train a professional body of 2,000 specialists within public administration, both at central and local levels.
Within this initiative, the University of Bucharest was selected to organize courses in 7 out of the 8 development regions, with an initial target of 1,754 participants. The program exceeded expectations, with 84 additional graduates, confirming the high level of interest in this type of training. The postgraduate course “Expert in Sustainable Development,” coordinated by Magdalena Platis, Vice-Rector for Students, Quality Management, Sustainability, and Social Responsibility, is organized by the University of Bucharest in partnership with Ascendis Consulting, SMART Integration SRL, and Goldbach Consulting SRL, with the support of the Government’s Department for Sustainable Development.Operational management of the project was ensured by Ionuț Constantin, lecturer at the Faculty of Administration and Business of the University of Bucharest.
