On Romania’s National Day, the University of Bucharest was awarded the „Order of Cultural Merit” in the rank of Grand Officer in the „Scientific Research” category by the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.
The decoration was presented to the Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Bucharest, Carmen Chifiriuc, PhD, by the Minister of Education, Ligia Deca, during a ceremony held at the Central University Library on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
As stated in the decoration decree, the distinction was awarded in recognition of the impressive results achieved in the intellectual and personal development of younger generations for promoting quality in Romanian higher education. It also highlighted the research activity conducted by the University of Bucharest during its 160 years of existence, celebrated this year.

Excellence in Research at the University of Bucharest
The University of Bucharest is affiliated with over 50 institutes, departments, and research centers, covering the areas of study offered by its faculties, as well as the „Dimitrie Brandza” Botanical Garden in Bucharest, the Hațeg Country UNESCO Global Geopark, several Neolithic and medieval archaeological sites, and a series of research stations: in ecology, in Sinaia and Brăila, in geography and geology, in Orșova, Eșelnița, and Sfântu Gheorghe, as well as in physics, in Surlari.
Additionally, the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB), founded in 2014, was designed as an innovative structure that fosters excellence and interdisciplinarity in Earth, Environment and Life Sciences, Exact Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences.
ICUB’s mission is to provide a dynamic and creative environment for both young and established researchers, positioning itself as a central hub in the international network of research institutes. It aims to promote collaboration and partnerships with other research centers and projects.
