On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the University of Bucharest hosted the meeting with the group of young international and Romanian volunteers, participants in the camp organized by the Cultural Association for UNESCO “Maria Foundation”. At the meeting that took place in the “Ioan Mihăilescu” Amphitheater of the UB Rectorate, the participants from Azerbaijan, Egypt, Jordan, Italy, Morocco, the Republic of Moldova, Turkey, Morocco and Romania had the opportunity to learn about the challenges and priorities of the University of Bucharest carried out by the UNESCO Chair and the teaching staff involved in ensuring the expertise of the UNESCO International Geoparks Tara Hațegului and Buzău County.
At the opening of the meeting, Madlen Șerban, secretary general of the National Commission of Romania for UNESCO, emphasized the importance of international cooperation and the promotion of values and cultures among the new generations of students, regardless of borders, languages or academic disciplines.
Next, prof. Sorin Costreie, PhD, vice-rector for University Networks and Public Relations of UB, emphasized the role of university alliances in stimulating educational development at all levels, from the implementation of the student exchange program, established in 1987, to CIVIS, the European Civic University of which UB is also a part, a community that counts 11 universities, approximately half a million students of various nationalities and over 37,000 professors and researchers. The involvement of each member in the CIVIS Consortium strengthens access to quality education and creates equal opportunities for all students.
At the end of the debate, prof. Viorel Vizureanu, PhD, dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, mentioned the master’s programs organized by the UNESCO Chair: Communication and Intercultural Studies, Intercultural Management, Business Administration (MBA), all in English.
Among the international partners of the UB UNESCO Chair are the Universities of Fribourg, Hamburg, Geneva, Dortmund, Regensburg, Siegen, Dijon, Burgundy School of Business, Pasquale Paoli University of Corsica and University of Applied Sciences in Hamm and Lippstadt.
The meeting was also attended by Lilian Ciachir, executive coordinator of the UNESCO Chair and Cristina Toma, member of the UNESCO geoparks coordination team, as well as Carmen Galluzzo, president of the Club for UNESCO in Taranto (Italy).
The 26 participants took part in the camp organized by the Cultural Association for UNESCO “Maria Foundation” from Romania, following a selection process from 2023 coordinated by the UNESCO Center for Cultural Heritage. The camp aimed to communicate and preserve the UNESCO heritage. This year, the participants visited the UNESCO International Geopark Țara Hațegului in Hunedoara County, managed by the University of Bucharest.
This year’s topic of the camp was dedicated to the figure of the sculptor Constantin Brâncuși: the work and the birthplaces and neighborhoods. The purpose of the Cultural Association for UNESCO “Maria Foundation” is to provide a public milieu for the affirmation of Romanian cultural, artistic and entrepreneurial cultural values and actions in the European context and the knowledge society.
