Romania’s national chemistry team achieved an outstanding result at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2026), winning one gold medal, two silver medals, and one bronze medal. The competition was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 10 to 19 July 2026 and brought together 363 students from more than 90 countries.
The Romanian medal winners are:
- Gold Medal: Matei-Gabriel Ursăchescu, a 12th-grade student at “B.P. Hasdeu” National College, Buzău.
- Silver Medals: Mihnea-Gabriel Alexe, a 12th-grade student at “Tudor Vianu” National College, Bucharest, and Mihai Stanciu, a student at “Moise Nicoară” National College, Arad.
- Bronze Medal: Tudor Ștefan Anghel, a 12th-grade student at “B.P. Hasdeu” National College, Buzău.
The four medalists were selected from an extended team of 19 students following an intensive training and selection programme held between 2 and 15 June 2026 at the University of Bucharest and the “C.D. Nenițescu” Institute of Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry, under the coordination of Professor Marius Andruh, member of the Romanian Academy.
The University of Bucharest faculty members involved in training and selecting the final team were Associate Professor Mihaela Matache from the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, together with Assistant Professor Codruța Popescu, Associate Professor Rodica Olar, Assistant Professor Cristina Tăbleț, Associate Professor Mirela Călinescu, and Assistant Professor Adina Răducan from the Faculty of Chemistry.
They worked alongside colleagues from Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca –Academician Cristian Silvestru, Professor Ion Grosu, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, Associate Professor Niculina Hădade, Associate Professor Ciprian Raț, and Associate Professor Andrei Rotaru – as well as Professor Ion Ion from the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest, Associate Professor Vlad Chiriac from the West University of Timișoara, Professor Ionuț Ledeți from the Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara, and Dr. Marioara Chirițoiu, Senior Researcher (CS III) at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Romanian Academy.
The University of Bucharest congratulates the four medalists, as well as the teachers who inspired their passion for chemistry – Dan Rotaru, Mirela Marcu, and Viorica Raicu – and all the students who represented Romania at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad.
About the Faculty of Chemistry
The success of Romania’s Chemistry Olympiad team comes at a time of growing interest in chemistry studies at the University of Bucharest. During the July 2026 admissions session, the Faculty of Chemistry received 1,213 applications, compared with 1,033 the previous year, representing an increase of more than 17%.
The Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme attracted the highest level of competition, with 419 applicants, equivalent to 16.96 applicants per state-funded place, making it one of the most competitive programmes at the University of Bucharest this year. The Medical Chemistry and Technological Biochemistry programmes also recorded significant increases in applications, with competition reaching 12.71 and 14.20 applicants per state-funded place, respectively.
