Thursday, April 25th 2024, the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest organizes a breast cancer awareness event which aims to educate women to start breast cancer screening by undergoing annual breast ultrasounds. The project has been developed within the CIVIS Blended Intensive Program Community and Public Health Promotion under the Framework of Modern Pedagogical Approaches.
The event aims to raise awareness regarding the development of breast cancer at unexpectedly, unusual young ages, as well to educate women on this topic, meaning initiating permanent monitoring programs for breast health, by undergoing annual breast ultrasounds and periodical self-examinations. More details on the CIVIS programs are available here.
The event will take place at the headquarters of the Faculty of Law (36-46 Mihail Kogălniceanu Blvd.), in the Aula Magna Hall, and is addressed to all women – students and teaching staff – of the academic community of the UB Faculty of Law. The event consists in a session of presentations held by several certified physicians, as well as a session of questions, discussions and information exchange.
At the same time, the event aims to draw attention to young women who are at risk, for three reasons: cancer diagnosed under the age of 30 is often in more advanced stages than in the case of women who are diagnosed in their 40’s – 50’s; in younger women, the form of cancer is always more aggressive than in women who are over 40-50; medical practice shows that there is an increase in the number of cases in women who are under 30 years old, but this is not sufficiently significant, from a statistical point of view, to be published in scientific studies which could bring about the reform of public policies.
In addition, professor Mara Georgescu, PhD, student at the Faculty of Law of the University of Bucharest and teaching staff at the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, is undergoing a study referring to the prevention of breast cancer among young women (who are not included in public screening programs), choosing as focus-group for her study female students from the Faculty of Law. This study will be presented during the CIVIS conference organized this year.
