During a ceremony that will take place Thursday, October 10th 2024, the University of Bucharest will offer the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to professor Barbara Cassin, one of the most influential women in worldwide philosophy. The event will begin at 2.30 PM in the Senate Hall of the University of Bucharest (90 Panduri Street).
President of the Administrative Council of Collège International de Philosophie, professor Barbara Cassin marked the development of philosophy at worldwide level, and also that of philology through papers with global impact, with effect on the connected disciplines in the area of humanities and social sciences equally.
She is the coordinator of the European Vocabulary of Philosophies, paper which reunited, in 10 years of work, a team of more than 150 experts, covering approximately 15 European languages, in which 4.000 specific terms are analyzed from an etymological, historical and disciplinary perspective. Two of Barbara Cassin’s important works were translated in Romanian: The European vocabulary of philosophies (fr. Vocabulaire européen des philosophies), translation coordinated by Anca Vasiliu and Alexander Baumgarten (Polirom Press, 2020) and In praise of translation (fr. Éloge de la traduction), translated by Bogdan Ghiu (TACT Press, 2024).
In addition, professor Barbara Cassin is one of the notable voices in the field of humanities, militating for the understanding of the subtlety of each language in proposing a particular philosophical thinking and to become aware of the specific horizons of the untranslatable. She is a member of the French delegation at UNESCO, having been trusted, in 2009, with establishing a network of women in philosophy. For that matter, having a Hellenic and German formation profile, professor Barbara Cassin invested her whole career in evaluating the role that translations of philosophical texts have in understanding the cultural differences between societies, and her research has brought an exceptional contribution to the area of language philosophy, closely observing the impact of the relation between multilingualism and multiculturalism.
Professor Barbara Cassin received, in 2012, on behalf of the French Academy, the Grand Prize for Philosophy (Grand Prix de Philosophie), she became citizen of honor of the São Paulo city, Brazil, and was made Knight of the Legion of Honor of the French Republic in 2014.
In 2018 she was chosen as member of the French Academy and became the fifth woman to receive the gold medal from the National French Centre for Scientific Research.
Bestowing the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Bucharest upon professor Barbara Cassin represents a sign of recognition of her prestigious scientific activity at international level.
